15 Grandma B's Chocolate Chip Cookies

On Mother's Day, while I visiting my mom, I raided her recipe box.

This is what I found.

A worn, well used 3x5 card in my Grandmother's handwriting for Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Immediately, in my mind, I was five years old, watching my grandmother's hands placing a still-oven-warm cookie onto a small square sheet of waxed paper.  She would fold each corner of the wax paper into the middle and secure it with a toothpick.  This sweet treasure was all mine to take with me on the long ride home.

I don't have a lot of memories of her as she passed away that following year.  The memories I do have of her are associated with food....I  remember her putting soft, homemade dinner rolls in large paper grocery sack and throwing it into the oven to warm up for a Thanksgiving dinner.  A large dish of barbeque potato chips on the kitchen table, ready for little fingers to dip into when we arrived.  Making homemade root beer in the summer....

Grandma = comfort food.

I'm not sure where she got this recipe and you will notice that it has no butter or shortening.  If you are concerned about hydrogenation or trans fats, this cookie is for you.

I made this with Canola oil.  Did you know that canola oil is a heart healthy oil?

One bite into this wonderful, soft, and nostalgic cookie tells me everything's all right with the world.

Thanks, Grandma.

  1. Somehow I inherited my husbands, maternal grandmother's recipes when she died. I've looked through everyone and I have no idea what most of the stuff is. Neither does my husband. Neither does his mom. I should just start pulling some out and see what happens.

    Lovely....how nice to have a heirloom recipe! I have a few of my mothers cookbooks and some hand-written recipes from dear friends who have passed on. I make a point to write my thoughts on every recipe I try. That way when my children get my cookbooks, they'll have memories....

    You have a great blog!

  5. Thanks! That is one of the reasons I started this blog; not only do I have a place to keep my family recipes, there is a part of me in the photos and writing in the posts....

    Oh, I love inheriting recipes from family. Some of my most treasured ones are from my great-grandmother and my grandma. Priceless really. Love the site. Glad to have connected through TK.

  7. What a lovely post. I love recipe passed down from grandmothers. Some of best are watching my grandmother cook. She was Russian/German and had 11 children so she made a lot of food, always!

  8. Isn't it wonderful stumbling upon such things? I have one of my grandmother's cookbooks and find it is such a treasure. Some of the recipes are actually written in my own, young handwriting. I remember when she'd babysit me she'd keep me busy by having me copy down recipes. What a wave of emotion washed over me when I found these in her book.

  10. What a sweet story. I too have inherited my grandmothers recipe boxes with hand-written, tattered, oil-stained scraps of paper with a recipe jotted down. Shortly after she died, I thumbed through almost all of them. I had to laugh because there were about a dozen recipes she had several copy after copy of. What great memories to cherish! Thanks for the reminder!
