0 OXO Good Grips Mandoline Slicer: Tomatoes

I had always wondered if my Oxo mandoline slicer would be able to slice tomatoes ...

I need a bunch of sliced tomatoes for deli sandwiches for a large group and decided to give it a try.

After taking the top core out with a paring knife, the tomato is inserted into the prongs of the pusher handle.

You can adjust the thickness (1.5 mm, 3mm, 4.5mm 6mm).  I chose 3mm.

As you can see, it slices all the way to the very end, leaving very little or no waste.  I like that!

Be very, very careful with the blade ~ it is sharp!!  The "V" blade works much better than a single blade, especially for slicing tomatoes.

I quickly and easily got about 13 slices per tomato (from Costco) with this cool kitchen tool...

My mom asked me to bring my slicer to our Labor Day barbeque to slice her garden tomatoes.  It worked very well with the firm, ripe tomatoes.  If the tomatoes were on the over-ripe side, they sliced easily, but did not hold their shape very well ~ ended up kind of mushed ...

So there you have it ... this nifty gadget has definitely earned a spot on my Cool Kitchen Tools page!
